Premiere at Film Forum

 

On the evening of January 26, 2024, Consul General Jorge Islas Lopez and the Mexican Cultural Institute in New York were extended a special invitation to the much-anticipated premiere of Lila Avilés' cinematic masterpiece, "TÓTEM," hosted at the renowned Film Forum. This enchanting film follows the story of 7-year-old Sol, who intricately navigates the preparations for her father's surprise birthday celebration. As the household crescendos into lively chaos, the mysterious absence of her father adds a compelling layer to the narrative.

Written and directed by Lila Avilés, the cast includes Naíma Sentíes as Sol, Montserrat Marañon as Nuri, Marisol Gasé as Alejandra, Saori Gurza as Esther, and Mateo García Elizondo as Tonatiuh.

"TÓTEM" has received nominations for the 2024 Independent Spirit Award and the 2023 Gotham Award for Best International Feature Film. It is also Mexico's official submission for the 2024 Academy Awards® in the same category. Recognized as one of the top five international films of the year by the National Board of Review, the film has received acclaim from Vulture, Vanity Fair, Associated Press, and Slate as one of the best films of the year.

The film achieved success at the Berlin Film Festival, winning the Ecumenical Jury Prize, and at the 2023 Morelia Film Festival, where it secured the Best Feature, Best Director, and Audience Award prizes.
